Cold Wave Impact On Texas PP Resin And Raw Materials

Jan 29, 2018

In January of this year, unusually cold weather led to the temporary closure of polypropylene resin and raw material units in the Houston area.

According to a PetroChemWire report, on January 17, an unplanned shutdown of a PP line at Braskem Americas in La Porte, Texas, occurred due to a frozen boiler launcher.

The report also pointed out that another PP line, operated by LyondellBasere Industries, was shut down on the same day for "power fluctuations."

According to reports, the temperature dropped causing ice and led to some power outages. According to PCW's reports, Dow DuPont also said that on January 17, the company's 2.3 billion-pound capacity ethylene / propylene unit in Freeport, Texas, was severely damaged.

The report also noted that there are also minor production problems with ethylene or propylene units operating in the area by Flint Hills Resources, Huntsman, Chevron Phillips Chemical and Enterprise Products.
